Silver Tent Travel – our aspiration
We travel not to escape life but for life not to escape us.
Silver Tent Travel is one of many projects being developed to support the membership offering a portfolio of life changing experiences that breathe life back into members’ hearts and souls, and help them discover and express their wild, wonderful and wise selves together in different settings.
A key and unique focus of Silver Tent Travel will be to meet and embrace our sisters around the world whose culture nourishes the innate wisdom of Elder Women and our deep connection to Mother Earth.
The places we visit, the activities we take part in and the people we meet will all be chosen in full collaboration with our indigenous hosts who will help us come to a deeper appreciation of what it means to be indigenous – to revere and love a place as sacred and know how to listen to and walk lightly on the land and protect her beauty and vitality.
The aim is for us each to fall in love – not just with the beautiful people we spend time with and the fascinating places we visit, but with life itself. All our senses will be indulged; our bodies nourished, minds stretched and heart cherished by the warmth of our hosts’ gracious hospitality and the loving support of our fellow travellers.
We’ll walk the land hand in hand with our hosts who know and love its every contour; feast, dance, sing and pray under the stars or illumined by a roaring fire; experience the therapeutic effects of wonder and awe; be gently lead through ancient ceremonies; and exchange knowledge and wisdom to help us cope with the shared challenges of our times.
“Nobody can discover the world for somebody else. Only when we discover it for ourselves does it become common ground and a common bond and we cease to be alone.” – Wendell Berry
Of course, we’ll take home hundreds of photos and selfies, unforgettable memories, many new friendship, aches from all the laughter and our own choice of gifts to share. But most importantly, we’ll take home a deep sense of connection with and love for our Earth Mother and all life forms; a heightened sense of our own purpose and the power of our renewed vitality and intentions.
Itinerary Plans for 2017
By the time the Silver Tent Summit is launched, we will announce our first itinerary – likely to take place in September or October 2017. It will be available exclusively for Silver Seed and Silver Grove members.
Our first destination will be British Columbia, Canada where 30 distinct First Nations have preserved and rejuvenated their own diverse languages, culture, customs and spirituality while playing a very positive role in the political, social and economic spheres of Canadian society. The purpose of the trip will be to meet and form friendships with elder women and their communities from the Coast Salish, Nuu-cha-nulth, and Okanagan Nations in British Columbia while enjoying a range of experiences in beautiful British Columbia. We in the west have much to learn from our Canadian sisters about our connection with Mother Earth and how to be in better touch with her laws and teachings.
British Columbia has some of Canada’s most spectacular scenery (mountain ranges; temperate rain forest, deserts, vineyards and world famous wineries; sheltered islands, deep fjords and still inland lakes). The geographical diversity of both the Pacific Northwest rain forest, the dry interior of the Okanagan and grasslands of the foothills east of the Rocky Mountains supported the emergence of many highly structured cultures, each nation having their own distinct history, culture, and society such that at one time this was the most densely populated areas of indigenous people ever recorded in Canada. The land and waters provided rich resources of wood, salmon, deer and bison.
The First Nations of Canada, who have lived in their territories for over 10,000 years prior to the arrival of Europeans in the mid 1700’s, were marginalized for most of the time since. Over the past forty years, these proud people have revitalized their cultures and emerged as resilient and determined able to play a key role in further developing Canada as a resourceful, compassionate nation.
We will be working closely with colleagues and friends in B.C. to develop an inspiring itinerary. The first departure will have 15 places. Detailed itinerary and cost will be posted during the Silver Tent Summit and on www.thesilvertent.com/travel/ in early May.
